Well the days of Androids being the answer for those that don’t want to pay the premium it takes to get a higher end phone are limited with the confirmation today by ETrade Supply of Foxconn, reported by The Times of India, the manufactures of the current iPhones, that a budget iPhone will hit the market by the end of 2013. The iPhone has a good grip on the market, as it stands right now they own approximately 50% of the cell phone sales in the United States, but as numbers have slightly slipped it isn’t surprising that Apple has been in search of ways to create as close to a monopoly as possible. They did so with the tablet market, as iPads became more common, they found the iPad Mini had a market and were able to capitalize on the lower-end, cheaper model. Apple might not be everyone’s favorite, but there is no doubt that they are one of the more business savvy companies out there today.
It is that very reason that Apple is searching for more. They don’t have to release more phones or variations, because users of Apple phones are happy with the units just the way they are. To bring more people to that point though, especially with phone providers like T-Mobile, offering the chance to purchase phones outright and avoid contracts and people on contracts wanting cheaper offerings it was essential that Apple found a way to get their products into more hands. Bringing out phones such as this means something along the lines of an iPhone 4 or 4S in the shell of plastic instead of a metal casing like the current iPhone offerings. Coupled with that, it is likely the screen will see a reduction in quality and that the size will be reduced back down to the 4.3″ screen we saw on previous models.
Androids on the other hand might be in trouble as a move like this shows that Apple can play their game too. See Android has had their hold on the mid-range market since their inception as that is more where the OS became popular. With Apple getting a few units within the same league, it will be a tough market for Android to maintain. The days of the $49-$99 contract Androids being the popular choice for those wanting a bargain smartphone are limited. It’s like the old saying when you go Apple, you never go back.
It is said that the iPhone 5S and new iPhone, what we will call the Mini, will be shown off on June 20th and hit the market days later.
