Fans of gaming have been absolutely spoiled for the first-third of this year with games beyond belief. It seems as though we have seen some heavy contenders for Game of the Year before the half way point, more so than anything in the past. There have always been some games, in previous years, that get the nod in the voting but in many cases they are forgotten about and washed to the side because of the market’s “what have you done for me lately” attitude toward it. So just in case at the end of the year some of these games are missed in the final voting, some should be and others shouldn’t, we are ensuring that at least some recognition is given to these titles. We also want your input too and deciding the Republic Reader’s Choice winners for the First-Third of the Year Awards. We will ensure that the second half gets its recognition too, and the third, but our focus now is on the “what have you done for me lately” and awarding the top three games of this year.
Here are the games that have been considered for a Top 3 spot: DmC, Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, Dead Space 3, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, Crysis 3, Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, MLB 13: The Show, Sim City, God of War: Ascension, Gears of War: Judgment, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, Fire Emblem Awakening, Castlevania Lords of Shadow: Mirror’s of Fate, Injustice: God’s Among Us, LEGO City Undercover, and Anarchy Reigns
Without Further Ado; Here Is The Video Game Republic’s Top 3 Games:
1. Bioshock Infinite
Bioshock Infinite was something special and having the honor to play such a beautiful and incredible experience was truly a blessing that was all on me. There was not a game brought forth that gave gamers a more in-depth game possibly not just of this first third but of this current console generation. Traveling through the land of Columbia is breath taking and the characters, even yourself as Booker DeWitt, are some of the best performances in gaming today. The other two games that are a part of the top three are deserving to be in the presence of Bioshock Infinite, but are not in the same vein as the top game possibly of not only the first-third but of the entire year even with some of the heavy hitters due at the toward the mid and end of the year. Read our review of Bioshock Infinite and you will see why, this is undoubtedly the undisputed champ of the first-third.
2. Ni Nu Kuni
If you love RPG’s than Ni Nu Kuni is probably for you like it is for many, one of the best games that you have ever played within the genre. While gamers that don’t normally enjoy games that are of this fashion were captivated by the storytelling and game play within the title, fans of the games within the RPG lore were delighted to have such a wonderful adventure in their grasps. Drippy and Oliver are two of the better characters developed, but together form something special. The light-hearted nature of the characters and the journey that they experience is something that if you haven’t had the chance to yet is a must play. Hence the reason it comes in at number 2 on our Top 3 First-Third Award list; holding out on us for almost 2 years got them this award, but how unfair!
3. Tomb Raider
Oh Lara Croft, the adventurer forged from those skimpy shorts and tight tank top got a total makeover, and yes for the better. Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics did more for the franchise than what had been done since its inception. There wasn’t a game that had more to loose than Tomb Raider did, remaking a legend is not an easy task. Doing the smart thing and telling how she got to the status that she did was one of the most brilliant decisions that could have been made with the franchise. There is definitely a future for the franchise to continue should the decision be made to do so. The gamble that was made was a calculated one, but a gamble indeed; lucky for Tomb Raider and Crystal Dynamics the pay day was bright and the future looks to be much of the same.
Honorable Mention: Fire Emblem Awakening - This was a complete toss up but with the risks taken with Tomb Raider, it made it an ever-so-slight edge to take a spot amongst the top above the fantastic Fire Emblem Awakening. The 3DS got one special game with a deep and rich experience that returns Chrome and his trusty crew looking to save their land once again. It is a slow and methodical experience, and can be relentless especially if you don’t have it set to allow characters to return after battle, but there isn’t a more rewarding title available on the portable market. It belongs amongst the top, but when it comes down to it, there are only three spots and there is always one that is deserving but just misses the mark.
Well there you have it, the top three titles of the first quarter. It was no easy task to pick only three games and even with an Honorable Mention it seems unjust that some other deserving titles be left in the rearview mirror. Gamers must rejoice that we had so many great titles brought forth and kept us as busy as any year to date. The bigger question is though, will these games last when you’re playing GTA V, The Last of Us, or Beyond: Two Souls toward the end of the year when it comes to the game of the year honors? Only time will tell, but until then let us know what you think in the poll below and sound off in the comments as to what your top three games of the year were and if they differ from ours! We’ll post the results on Saturday 4/22/13 after the polls close at 11:59 PM on Friday 4/21/13
